Question: What are Wildcard symbols?

Wildcard symbols are used to create a search where there are unknown characters, multiple spellings or various endings. These can be useful to use if you are unsure of the spelling of a word or for words that are spelt differently in American English compared to British English, for example; organizational vs organisational or labor vs labour.

The two main wildcard symbols are the ? symbol and the # symbol. For guidance on what these do and how best to use them see our guide here.
